Gustaf Adolf Tenggren
(1896- 1970)
Tenggren's subjects ranged from pirate girls to Pinocchio in a career that ranged from lush, romantic art to stylized simplicity for numerous children's books in his last years. The Swedish native was already an accomplished illustrator in Scandinavian countries when he set up shop in New York in 1923. Youth literature illustrations for Heidi, Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales, The Christ Story for Boys and Girls, A Dog of Flanders, Dickey Byrd, Heidi, and Anderson's Fairy Tales; adult market books included The Good Earth and The Ring of the Niblung. After a stint a Disney (conceptualizing for Snow White, Pinocchio, Silly Symphony), Tenggren began illustrating books with his own name as part of the title (e.g. The Tenggren Tell-All Book, Tenggren's Cowboys and Indians, etc.). While Tenggren usually signed his art or initialed it, Snider advertising was anonymous.
